Visa Flexible Credential (VFC) enables Issuers and Fintechs to broaden the services they can provide to new and existing cardholders by enabling easy access to multiple funding sources through a single Visa credential.

VFC Managed and VFC Self-Serve are two deployment models available for VFC issuers, solving for the same use cases but with different deployment approaches and feature-sets. These APIs are only applicable for VFC Managed. For details on VFC Self-Serve, please contact your Visa representative for more information.

How It Works

Visa Flexible Credential enables Issuers to broaden the services they can provide to new and existing cardholders by enabling easy access to multiple funding sources through a single Visa credential.

  • Program Enrollment: Issuer enrolls participating cards into Visa Flexible Credential, and registers for use-cases and programs with Visa.
  • Pre-Transaction: Issuer offers a cardholder experience to collect consumer choice of funding for an upcoming transaction, or defines a predetermined set of rules for identifying transactions. Depending on the implementation model, the rules/choices are stored within Visa firewalls (managed model) or within Issuer firewalls (self-serve model).
  • During Transaction: Visa qualifies a transaction as eligible per the pre-set program rules. Visa/Issuer confirms the funding source for the transaction based on pre-set cardholder choices and program eligibility. Issuer approves the transaction and Visa sends the appropriate funding source details to the Acquirer in the response.
  • Post-Transaction: Visa clears the transaction on the product ID and account funding source approved at the time of purchase (and completes settlement and reporting accordingly).
